Running for the third time this year, the annual Academic Successes Evening has become one of the most popular and enjoyable events in our calendar. The evening brings together students from years 12 and 13 and last year’s leavers, along with their parents and grandparents, guests, staff and the school’s governors, to celebrate their achievements in the summer’s public examinations. For several of the summer’s leavers this was the third time they had attended, meaning that they had again excelled at the very highest level, and were justifiably proud of their achievements as they looked forward to their lives beyond Trent.
All present were also treated to the hugely entertaining reflections of keynote speaker Paul Mann QC, OT, who talked about his glittering legal career and the high-profile cases he has been involved in, as well as his fond memories of school. By his own admission Paul did not always achieve academic greatness whilst at school, but spoke warmly of the all-round opportunities which he believed shaped the successful adult he became. He joked that he has not yet begun to think about an epitaph for his gravestone, but that ‘Made at Trent’ would be entirely appropriate. Paul was generous in his praise of our current students and left them with some key advice: to have humility in their success; courtesy in their dealings with everyone, and, above all, to live life to the full.
