Foreign Language Spelling Bee Winner!

Academic

TIAM BAHARVAND wins East Midlands Final in the Foreign Language Spelling Bee to qualify for the National Final in July

On March 19th, our plucky contestants (Tiam, along with other school winners Joe Dixon, Emily Henderson and Bethany Turley) were taken to the Corby Business Academy for the Regional Final of the Foreign Language Spelling Bee, against many competing schools from the East Midlands. They all performed superbly in the first round, in front of an audience of pupils competing in the same language (French, German, or Spanish).

Following the first round, they then entered the larger theatre for the final, in which the best four pupils in each language would be announced. These would then compete in front of all 94 contestants. Trent were delighted to see that Tiam had made it through, and then looked on in admiration as he rattled through his spellings with speed and accuracy, with what would prove to be a winning performance. Tiam was declared Regional Champion, proudly receiving a trophy, medal and certificate to the applause of all those present.

We are extremely proud of Year 7 and their commitment to Modern Languages and we wish Tiam all the best as he travels to Cambridge in July for the National Final!

Background to the competition:

This year, our Year 7 linguists have been entered into the National Foreign Language Spelling Bee competition. It all began in September where each student in Year 7 was given a list of 50 words to learn and spell in the foreign language – quite a feat! This meant not only learning the meaning of each new piece of vocabulary, but also learning the correct pronunciation of each letter. There are 4 stages to the competition. In December, we had our class competition with all students taking part. The top 4 students from each class, earned their entry to the second stage – the school competition!
