Dominic meets Kevin Gilmartin

Events

This weekend Dominic Woodhead, Year 8 met Kevin Gilmartin who is a model maker and special effects designer who has made props galore for the Harry Potter set, the latest Bat-mobile and worked with James Bond…. He also gave Dominic some great advice for 'Little Shop of Horrors' props management and advice on engineering in a film setting. Dominic tells us of his experience:

"I met Kevin last weekend and he explained that he works in the film industry......this really got my attention!

He showed me six models of the chess pieces used in the film, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone. They are made out of wood with a thin bronze overlay of paint that shone in the light and made them look like real gold. We then went on to look at photographs of a Bat-mobile an Oompah Loompah model and so many more.....

His latest project was to design twenty glass slippers for Cinderella, his was the smash-able one made out of a clever plastic. He also showed me the pumpkin that Cinderella pops out of after the stroke of midnight and explained how it was constructed.

After seeing all of his work projects, I asked him if I could possibly do some work experience with him and he said yes! He also said I may be able to come and visit the set of the new film “24”! I explained I was at Trent College, love Drama and that I am also a member of The Television Workshop. I also explained that we are currently working on a production at Trent of "Little Shop of Horrors" and that I will be handling the props.

His top tips for prop and model construction/building for the production is to make sure you do your part right and if everyone does the same then the team can’t fail and all will go like clockwork. Patience, timing and precision is everything. He wished us luck and said to call for any further help!

Kevin has worked on many films and with actors including :- James Bond Casino Royale , The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies, Eragon, Resident Evil, Band of Brothers, Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone, Cinderella,  Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Djimon Hounsou, Milla Jovovich and Robbie Coltrane."

Little Shop of Horrors runs at Trent from 4 - 6 February 2014. Tickets are available by clicking here or emailing tom.singleton@trentcollege.net.
