On Friday 26th June 2015 we were delighted to formally open the Jessica Hope Gauntley Memorial. This was in memory of Jessica who was a much loved member of our school until her life was cut tragically short when, on February 26th 2013, aged just 16 she died of brain cancer.
Jess was a member of our current Year 13 and many of her year group, their parents, staff and the Gauntley family came in for the opening on Friday evening.
The memorial design was largely the work of Meggie Jordan (current Year 13 and a close friend of Jess) and Geoff Thomson (member of the Design Technology department at Trent). Meggie based her EPQ project around this and worked very closely with the Gauntley family and Mr Thompson so it was sensitively designed in the style of the JHG badge.
For making the design a reality a great deal of credit goes to James Gregory, Graham Bowler, Tom Halton and the Estates team in general.
The memorial very much became a labour of love for Tom Halton for several months as, brick by brick, it gradually took shape. Working in variable weather conditions & often outside regular hours, Tom remained upbeat and passionate about this project.
What we have ended up with is a beautiful memorial to a lovely girl who was a friend to all. As the years pass thousands of young boys and girls will enjoy sitting chatting around this memorial – sharing in precious happy times together as they grow up.
