Tom Wood from Year 7 is training hard this winter in his bid to follow in the footsteps of home-grown Formula One superstars Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton by landing British Cadet Karting Championship title glory next year.
Tom, who enjoyed his most successful season to date in 2013, will be working on both his driving and fitness, including racing at club events and travelling to Spain for testing in February, in preparation for the start of what is set to be a big season for him at the end of March.
Tom is part of a new Young Racing Driver Academy (YRDA) programme, backed by Arden International and partners and launched in May this year focussing on mentoring, managing and marketing the cream of Britain’s emerging motorsport talent.
This year Tom lived up to his early promise, being crowned top rookie at both the British Iame Cadet Championship and National Comer Cadet Championship – finishing third overall in both – which earned him a special award he will be receiving at the prestigious Autosport International Show at the NEC Birmingham in January.
Tom has been driving since he was just three-and-a-half years old, whizzing around in electric karts at local leisure centres during school holidays. He moved into petrol karts aged six, and competed his first Motor Sports Association (MSA) - the sole motor sport governing body for the UK - race when he was eight. Now it’s all about putting in the hard yards to keep his F1 ambition on track.
Tom is still seeking sponsorship for his 2014 campaign. Anyone interested in supporting him should contact firstname.lastname@example.org and or visit his website at www.tomwoodracing.com
