Trent Achieve Double Success In The Rugby 7's!

Rugby 7s

Trent College senior 7’s side has achieved a double success over the past two weekends. At the prestigious North of England Tournament on Sunday 3rd March and now in its 25th Year, Trent enjoyed a successful run in the Plate Competition, having lost their opening group game to a very strong Ellesmere College team. In overcoming Kirkham Grammar, the side secure second place and a meeting with Denstone in the Quarter Final. Despite going down to 5 men at one stage, the team stayed calm and ran out 24-12 winners. The Semi-Final proved a bruising encounter, but Trent ran out comfortable winners 38-12, with Jacob Heath, Joe Livesey and Myles Costello all scoring a brace of tries each. The Final, against Wirral Grammar School, was no less tough and under the lights a strong first half display earned the team a 24-7 victory. Will Allman capped off a fine tournament with a try, as did Ben Trembling and Jack Mason.

The squad then went into the inaugural Manchester Sevens on Sunday 10th March with high hopes of doing well. Despite the ‘artic’ conditions in which the pool games were played, the team started where they had left off the previous week. Opening wins against Rishworth (46-0), St Lawrence (36-5), Millfield (36-0) and Wirral Grammar (14-10) secured a top spot in the group and an easier semi-final, if there is one against Ampleforth! Under improving conditions the team were irrepressible and through the strong touch line running of Ben Trembling, the sniping of Myles Costello and the strength of Jack Mason and Will Johnson, a 34-7 victory was nothing less than they deserved. Warwick School looked favourites from the other semi- final, but Wirral caused an upset and our third encounter with them in a week was set up in the Final. Trent proved too strong in the opening exchanges and through a hat trick of tries from Joe Livesey, and two more from Jacob Heath and Ben Trembling, Trent built an unassailable lead. Wirral, to their credit, did not lie down, but it was to no avail and the Competition was won with a 27-19 victory.

The whole squad have played with credit in the three competitions to date and have only lost one match in the 18 games played. This sets them up for a crack at Rosslyn Park, to be played on the 19th and 20th March.

Congratulations go to; Jacob Heath (Captain), Jack Mason, Nick Gray, James Fish, Kartar Soar, Oli Mantle, Ben Trembling, Will Johnson, Ed McCrorie, Tom Kent, Joe Livesey, Will Allman, Myles Costello and Ben Cooper.
