Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Presentations

Duke of Edinburgh (DofE)

Ten students travelled to Matlock on the evening of Friday 21st September to receive their D of E certificates and badges at a Derbyshire award group presentation. Rohan Desai, who left in July, collected his Gold badge and will soon be invited to a national Gold Award Presentation at St James’s Palace in London to receive his certificate, possible from the Duke himself. Keira Boddington and Lizzy Gibney got their Silver certificates, while Nicola Hodson, Sophia Lewyckyj, Shannon Hamilton, Dominic Kalantary, Yiannos Kozakis, Laura Pritchett and Harriet Manson were presented with Bronze certificates. Congratulations to all those present, and also to those who were invited but could not make it on this occasion.

The ceremony included some words of welcome from Ian Price (DCC Head of Sport, Outdoor and Residential Education) and the awards were given by the Chairman of Derbyshire County Council, Councillor George Wharmby. The audience was also treated to an entertaining and inspiring speech by Nigel Vardy, a well-known mountaineer who has lost all his fingers and toes to frostbite pursuing his passion for expeditions, but who refuses to let this stop him from continuing to go out into the mountains.

There is another presentation due in November and it is likely that there will be plenty of Trent students invited along to get their awards.
