Whole School Programme Attracts Prestigious Guests

Trent College has recently attracted some esteemed guest speakers as part of its Whole School Programme.

The Whole School Programme was introduced to the School in 2000 to provide pupils with the opportunity to meet inspirational people from the world of politics, sport, literature and business, whilst enhancing their knowledge of a range of subjects and issues.

Bill Furniss, swim coach to Olympic medal winner and local girl Rebecca Adlington OBE, visited Trent College to inspire Lower School pupils. Furniss was presented with the Coach of the Year award by the British Swimming Coaches and Teachers Association (BSCTA), after he famously helped Rebecca Adlington to one of the most impressive Olympic performances in recent years. Rebecca said after her triumph in Beijing, that 'if it hadn't been for him, I wouldn't be here today.' Bill gave an inspiring talk to pupils in Years 7 and 8, discussing Rebecca's memorable performances, how she achieved her goals, and her daily training routine when she was their age.

Haven C. Roosevelt, grandson of former American President Franklin Roosevelt, also shared his wisdom and experience with current Sixth Formers. A Harvard graduate and lawyer with over 40 years experience, his expertise lies in the fields of commercial and construction litigation, particularly in major capital intensive projects. Students were fascinated to hear his experiences and life story.

Mr Roosevelt's visit coincided with Trent College's sixth annual mock law case. Year 11 students donned full legal regalia of wigs and gowns, and acted for the defence and prosecution in a trial before Judge Ian Meakin, an International Arbitration Judge based in Geneva. The event tests students' preparation, intellect and oratory, and has proven to be an exciting and rewarding experience for all students involved, not just those who are planning on a legal career in the future.

Most recently, we were visited by Tom Avery, one of the UK's foremost explorers and only one of 41 people to have reached both the North and South poles on foot. Year 11 students were inspired by his experiences and fascinated to hear of his adventures, especially as they will have the chance to take part in the School's next major overseas expedition in 2011. Past destinations have included Iceland, East Greenland and Mongolia, with China a potential contender for the School's next adventure.
