Combined Cadet Force
What is it?
The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) is a youth organisation sponsored and supported by the Services. The aim of the CCF is to provide an opportunity for young people to exercise responsibility and leadership in a disciplined environment. Through the use of military-orientated and adventurous training, cadets have the opportunity to develop their sense of responsibility, leadership skills and the qualities of self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance, perseverance and a sense of service to the community.
Trent College CCF
Trent College CCF has two sections; Army and RAF. All Year 10 pupils join the CCF and enter the section of their choice. From Year 11 upwards CCF is voluntary; many pupils opt to stay in and use CCF for the service element of their Duke of Edinburgh Silver and Gold Awards.
What does it involve?
Training is on a Monday afternoon. There are three Field Days (one per term) and a summer camp. Cadets in the RAF section have flying and gliding opportunities and all cadets can apply to go on courses to learn leadership or adventure training.
Outline of programme
Year 10 cadets undergo Proficiency training. For all cadets this involves an introduction to drill, skill at arms, navigation, fieldcraft and self-reliance training. In addition, RAF cadets take their Part 1 test so they can participate in gliding and flying.
Year 11 cadets undergo advanced training in the above activities and are taught methods of instruction as they prepare themselves for leadership opportunities. In addition, RAF cadets learn the Principals of Flight, Navigation and Airmanship, so that they become eligible for Gliding Scholarships and other RAF courses.
Year 12 and 13 cadets put those leadership skills into practice and take charge, teaching elements of the proficiency and the advanced training, under the supervision of the Officers.
