The submissions for Trent’s first Lower School independent study project have been a huge success. The project theme of ‘trees’ was decided on as Trent has one of the best school arboretums in the country and it therefore seemed fitting for pupils to carry out their projects with ‘trees’ as the main theme. All students have had from the start of Lent Term through to the start of the Trinity Term to undertake their projects and they were prompted to consider how trees might be related in any way to a topic of their choice.

The aim of the project was to provide an opportunity for independent learning and research skills to develop. The general title was designed to give students the inspiration to explore areas across a range of subject areas. Suggestions from each academic department were given to guide students’ ideas on how they could link trees to the subject of their choice. From an Art inspired project to the History of trees and how they are used in Design and Technology in our world today. The possibilities were endless!

Form tutors were available to help guide and monitor the progress of the project but the management of time, accumulation of resources and production of the final product was organised entirely by the students. This project has given Lower School an introduction to independent study which will be invaluable to them during their time at Trent and beyond.

The projects have been assessed and the best ones will be displayed at Speech Day with prizes awarded.
