Trent College Scholarships
The purpose of awarding a Trent College Scholarship is to recognise excellence, and identify an example for others of the heights to which they can aspire.
Scholars will be guided by Department Heads and supported by their tutors in order that they may enjoy their role and lead their peers by example. The Scholar's contribution, attitude and commitment will be monitored by the appropriate Director, who also reserves the right to recommend to the Head the withdrawal of scholarship status if it is clear that the conditions are not being met.
All Scholars are expected to maintain an excellent performance in their field. Fundamental to the role of a Scholar is to lead by example and to be aware of the privileged and important position a Scholar has in the academic and pastoral structure of the School.
The notes below indicate the specific responsibilities of each area of scholarship.
Academic
Academic Scholars are expected to lead their peers by example in the academic sphere. This means that they will display an attitude in class, and towards their studies, which is exemplary. They will pursue breadth and depth in their academic study and develop and demonstrate the skills of an independent learner. They will involve themselves in extra-curricular cerebral activities such as the Whole School Programme and Academic Forum and be expected to take a full and active role in all areas of school life.
Art
Art Scholars are expected to make an extended contribution to the high standards achieved in the Art Department. They should study the subject to at least GCSE standard and develop an extended personal study of work at extra-curricular opportunities. In Art, an interest is expected and nurtured beyond the normal academic workload and centres on personal motivation. Additionally, Art Scholars will contribute to the presentation of artwork around the School to promote excellent practice and enhance the environment, and they will help design invitations and programmes for School events. They will assist the Art Department teaching staff when called upon to do so, e.g. Sixth Form Art Scholars assisting at Workshops, and meet with the Head of Department when called upon to do so to discuss art initiatives which will benefit the School as a whole.
Drama
Drama Scholars are ambassadors for the department. As such we expect our Scholars to lead by example and eventually inspire and motivate others. We expect our Drama Scholars to achieve high grades in curriculum Drama and to participate in a range of productions through performance, design, or as a technician or stage manager. Drama Scholars are enthusiastic and demonstrate a commitment to working in a team and developing their skills. In addition, Drama Scholars are expected to take part in projects and productions which are specifically chosen for them.
Music
Music is a key part of life at Trent College and Music Scholars are expected to make a strong contribution by leading others by example and playing in such ensembles and performances as the Music Department feels appropriate. They should sing in the choir and are expected to continue with Music as an academic subject up to at least GCSE level. Music Scholars are expected to study and make progress on their main instrument for the duration of their time at the School.
Sports
Sports Scholars are expected to make a strong contribution to the Sporting life of the School. They are expected to lead by example, showing commitment to the Department and the School through the Physical Education programme, curricular sport and extra-curricular fixtures and sporting activities programmes where appropriate. They should participate in the major team sports of the School until at least the end of Year 11. Sports Scholars are expected to be ambassadors for the School at all times should they practise or play outside the School.
