Careers and Higher EducationCareers and Higher Education
The Careers department provides comprehensive careers advice to students throughout their time at Trent College. Students are introduced to the world of work in Year 7 as part of the PSHE programme. As students progress through the school we assess their particular skills, interests and knowledge in the context of career choices and higher education opportunities. Students are encouraged to explore a wide range of career possibilities using a variety of software and The Cambridge Occupational Analysts profiling programme, which ensures that all pupils have the opportunity to undertake an assessment programme to help with A level choices.
In Year 11, students are strongly encouraged to take part in a week of work experience in order to help formulate their career aspirations and to add weight to their UCAS applications. Guidelines are provided by the department on how to go about finding suitable placements but students are expected to research and organise their own week of work experience in order to develop initiative and independence. A Careers Convention is organised biennially for Years 11, 12 and 13, when students are given the opportunity to meet and discuss careers and opportunities in higher education with 35-40 delegates representing a wide range of professions and university courses. In the Sixth Form, careers advice continues to be offered while specific guidance is given on the university application process through the Sixth Form pastoral system. We recognise too that parents play an important role in the decision making process regarding choice of university, and to this end we hold an evening in January to inform them of some of the key aspects of the application process. At Trent College we pride ourselves on the thorough preparation we provide for our students to enable them to move seamlessly from school life to that of university, with a spirit of curiosity, a thorough grounding in independent learning and above all confidence.
