STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY IN THE SIXTH FORM

Over 90% of Year 13 students at Trent have a position of responsibility within the school. Without this input, the quality and breadth of the school day and community would have a different feel and tone. Students also gain from having real responsibility, but with the training, support and advice from staff.

The variety of Student Responsibility Posts (SRPs) is very wide indeed, and include the following:

School Prefect

Tier Prefect

Head of House

Head of School

Head of Lower School Team

Sports Captains hockey, rugby, netball, swimming, tennis, athletics

Head of the Combined Cadet Force

NCOs in the Combined Cadet Force

Chair Academic Forum

Chair Debating and Politics Society

Chair Film Society

Head of Trent Leadership

Senior Instructor Trent Leadership

School Bank responsibilities including Manager of the branch

Paragon Investments responsibilities

Junior Science assistants

and there are more!

The vast majority of these posts are filled after students have applied for a post and then a selection procedure is undertaken. Trent College believes in searching for, and developing, the potential and talent of individuals and therefore in our selection we look at potential and genuine interest in the SRPs as well as the talents and abilities of individual students to perform well in them.

SCHOOL PREFECTS AND THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Trent College has eighteen School Prefects currently, and they have a considerable role to play in the good order and smooth running of the school:

Joanne Taylor

Harriet Oliver

Nicola Johnson

Emily Rattray

School Prefects also meet weekly with their line manager, the (Assistant Head) to discuss issues about the school and their role. School Prefects undertake a variety of duties including a school wide patrol, Dining Hall, buses and astro turf. One of their key roles is to liaise with younger pupils. There are some School Prefects on duty every break, lunch and after school session of a school day and they will often front events and guide visitors around the school. They are a very important part of Trent College. The School prefect body is a whole school group, patrolling every day and making contact with pupils of all ages.

The School Prefect body is led by the Head of School, who works with three Senior Prefects. The Head of School meets daily with the Assistant Head (Head of Sixth Form) and the Senior Prefects meet regularly themselves, and at least weekly with Senior Management including the Head.

The Head of School, Kirsten Johnson, is responsible for organising the Prefect team, supporting the Prefects in their duties and dealing with issues that arise. Each of the Senior Prefects has a duty day when they are responsible for overseeing the Prefect duties.

"To be appointed Head of School is a great honour. After being here since year 7, I’m glad that my role this year will give me the opportunity to give something back to the school. By listening hard to year group representatives in school council meetings, I can try and bring about changes that are desired by the pupils. Also, with Joel, Nikki, and Emil, I can support the school and tier prefects, so that they can in turn help support the students lower down the school. It is a very rewarding job, and I feel proud to be able to influence this great school." (Kirsten Johnson, Head of School)

Kirsten is supported by Emil Rybczak, Nicola Johnson and Joel Randall as her senior prefects.

The four Senior Prefects

TIER PREFECTS

There are currently over forty Year 13s who are Tier Prefects. These Prefects assist the smooth running and supervision of Years 7-11 inclusive, and also have an important pastoral and support role with the pupils in both Lower and Main School. They have duties that are based in the Year Group areas and are viewed by the Heads of Year in the two Tiers as performing a vital support role to the staff. The Tier Prefects are organised by two of the school prefects, Lucy Howarth (Lower School) and Matt Swann (Main School)

HEADS OF HOUSES

Within the Sixth Form there are four Heads of Houses. These students have a particular role in developing the 6th Form as a community and to suggest and help enforce the standards of individual and collective responsibility appropriate for our 6 th Form.

We act as representatives of the students, and contribute regularly to Assemblies. We have direct access to the Sixth Form Management Team of teachers, and one of our key jobs is to develop a sense of community within our own Houses but also in bringing the Houses together as one Sixth Form. We work with the Extension Programme Committee to organise events and competitions, but we also help to monitor the Houses and respect for the facilities.’

OTHER STUDENTS LEADERS

With 90% of the Year 13 involved, there are many others involved in student leadership. One of these areas is Trent Leadership– see separate section for that, and some other areas follow:

COMBINED CADET FORCE (CCF) Senior NCO's

CCF Senior NCO's

Matthew Smith, Kirsten Johnson, Rachel Saville, Ben Lowe, Emma Turnbull and Troy Whyte
